  • Putting a mask on an adjustment layer?

    Hi,

I have a mov of a man in front of a greensceen that I have brough into after effects. I have keyed out the background and keyframed the position throughout the clip so that he stays in the same place.

My problem is, I want to mask an area around him as the key has left a bit of fuzziness, but when I draw a mask it travels with the keyframed position movement.

Do I make the mask on an adjustment layer above so that the mask will always be in the same place?
I tried this, but it has no effect. How can I link it to just the mov layer?

Is this the best way to do it?

if i m understanding you correctly, you are trying to create a garbage matte to mask-out portions of your green screen…

if you create a new solid and apply a mask to it (you can adjust the size and shape later if needed). position that layer above you footage layer in the timeline. then from the modes panel for the footage layer, choose alpha matte (layer-above-name) from the trk mat dropdown. this will take the alpha from the above layer and apply it to the footage.

if you don’t see the ‘modes’ panel in the timeline click the triangle in the upper-right corner of the timeline and choose columns>modes to bring up the panel.

you might also check out this tutorial for creating easy, tight junk mattes. you may not need it for this project, but it is very useful for keying.
