purchasing ONLY fcp pro 6 (not fcp studio 2)??
Posted by Tom Adams on May 17, 2007 at 5:20 pmIs it possible to buy FCP 6 by istelf? I don’t want dvd studio, motion, color, etc…(well, of course, i do WANT it but I don’t NEED it). I went to apple’s site but don’t see fcp being offerered as a stand alone deal. I really hope I’m not gonna’ be forced to buy the whole package and not use $700 worth of software.

May 17, 2007 at 5:25 pmYou have to purchase the entire bundle which is called Final Cut Studio 2. You can’t purchase the applications separately. This started with Final Cut Pro 5 I believe.

May 17, 2007 at 5:34 pmWell, Final Cut costs $1299, and the others are a free gift.
Unless you’re buying DVD Studio Pro, then that’s $1299, and the others are a free gift.
Etc.

See, that’s the one that really SHOULD be offered separately as I know several folks who used to use DVD Studio Pro because that’s all they needed. It was $499 I believe the last time it was a stand-alone app. Those folks switched to Windows and another app when Apple integrated the entire Studio as they have no desire for video editing, motion graphics or audio editing software.
So in that regard, I like the fact that Adobe still allows you to purchase the apps as stand alone items. Yes it’s cheaper to buy the entire Creative Suite, but if all you need is DVD Authoring software, then just buy that.

May 17, 2007 at 5:56 pmfor what you’re getting (even if you were only getting FCP for $1299), it’s a great deal. Think about it as though Final Cut costs $1299 and you’re getting the other stuff free. You’ll probably end up using it more than you expect once you have it.

FCP as a stand alone has never been less than the price of the studio package. In reallity you’ll be getting more like $7000.00 worth of software you won’t be using considering the original cost of Final Touch(Color) and DSP and not to mention Sound Track and Motion.
This studio bundle seemed to originate when Adobe released their studio kit for editors. Since FCP was taking a lion’s share of the editor market, Adobe bolstered Priemier sales by bundleing in a kit form for the same price as FCP. Apple countered with FCS bundles and the rest is history. Most of us who have purchased these programs separately as well as the separate upgrades are certainly not about to start complaining. I just wonder when Apple will throw Shake into the mix! (they already cut the price of it by 800%!)
I guess they figure when you are ready to graduate from Final Cut Express you are ready for the works!

I believe Apple is discontinuing Shake and building a new compositing powerhouse to take its place. Let’s hope the new package stays at $500.
