I’m having a weird problem that I just can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere.

I’m trying to use the puppet tool to do a basic but realistic motion. The layer that I am attempting to do this on is a continuously rasterized layer (vector image from AI), within its own pre-composition. Whenever I put in a pin, suddenly an area of the layer has this dotted line of transparency. It looks as if its the outline of the layer offset to a different position. When I un-click the continuous rasterization, it disappears, so this is definitely the issue, but the layer MUST be rasterized.

    Thanks for any advice,
    Melissa

I had similar issues. Here’s my setup:

make ‘cut out style’ animation by animating separate limb layer rotations, with a heirachy setup from torso down to fingers.. etc.

Then precomp the whole character after it’s animated.

Then add puppet tool layer of animation. I had trouble with bits of the character going transparent, but I fixed it by changing the puppets mesh expansion right up. (find it by twirling down puppet tools in timeline on your layer, twirl down mesh – find expansion.

I know its a few months since you posted. How is progress? I just posted on the AE forum a post about using puppets with rigged characters, you may be interested or have some tips for me.

I’m having the same problem, trying to animate a hand walking, got the animation right then had this damn transparent outline wrecking the image. Had to abandon the animation to get the job done unfortunately.

I thought of a neat trick tonight to solve this dotted line nuisance. This problem seems prevalant among layers with nested puppet tools. It also happens with video files to me.

I don’t bother with splitting up layers. I just duplicate my layer and move it a few pixels in a direction. This will hide that white jagged edge nicely!

I know this is a fast dirty method of correction but my animations are quick and cheap anyway. I have an old laptop.

I’d like to know what really causes that tear with the puppet tools. Anyone know?
