  • Punchy opening sequence?

Hi all. I have done various school productions and group ski trip videos in the past with what I now realise to be somewhat lacklustre opening titles.

What I’d like to do is create a good punchy opening sequence to this year’s ski video that almost looks like a pop video with a punchy backing track (like “Vertigo” by U2 or similar) and quick-cut clips from the 2 hours of video footage I have.

I’d like to include a few bits where there’s a sort of “cut-out” effect where a skiier or snowboarder is isolated from the background then superimposed (with the sort of “torn-edge” effect around the border) over the top of another background or something…

Anyhow – what would you recommend as the best workflow method to achieve this? In the past I’ve used Premiere to scroll through the raw footage, set up in and out points, drag the video to the assets window to duplicate it then fine-tune it on the timeline. I’m sort of aware, however, that this may not be the best method – I have just upgraded to Premiere Pro 2 and I have After Effects 6.5 too. I feel I need to use After Effects for some decent effects, but this would entail having dozens of smaller clips exported from Premiere first, wouldn’t it? Is this the normal way to do things or not?

Sorry to be a bit “newbie” here – just trying to sort out the best methods!

If I understand this correctly, this would require a lot of After Effects and Photoshop work. Do you have a sample of the effect you are trying to accomplish? If so, we can create a step-by-step guide.

Are we tolerating suggested ripping off of commercial music on CCow these days ..?

Just about all commercially-released music is protected by copyright, and should not be used for editing without paying license fees to the rights holders. There is (much cheaper, but also not famous) library music available, with quite a variety to choose from.

Or you could contact U2’s record label and ask about permission to use.

With your (short) track legal and in place, you’d perhaps want to design your sequence (paper, head, and assemble relevant visuals in PPro. You could then copy and paste your PPro timeline to AE to work on the effects.
