  • Pulldown/dupe frame issue w 24p HDV transcoded to ProRes

    Hey all,
I’m editing a music video that was shoot in 24p on the Sony V1U. I captured the footage from the cam over firewire, using the HDV Apple ProRes 1080p24 Easy Setup (using Studio 3) and am editing in a 23.98 timeline.

Most of the footage looks great, but maybe 1/3 of it has a pulldown issue when put into the 23.98 timeline. With most of the footage, FCP interprets the pulldown properly and when stepping through a shot in the timeline, for example, FCP has stripped out the interlacing and I see all the progressive frames (ABCD, ABCD, etc). However, with maybe 1 out of 3 clips when it’s put into the 23.98 timeline, I am getting skipped and duplicated frames – basically I’m seeing ABDD, ABDD. It looks like FCP can’t get the cadence right when removing the pulldown.

This is the first time I’ve dealt with this workflow, so I’m not sure if I just made a settings error, or if there’s something else going on. If I do a reverse telecine with Cinema Tools, that seems to resolve the issue (with the benefit of reducing the file size), but I don’t know if that may cause problems down the road. Is this normal behaviour, and if so, should I do that reverse telecine on everything?

    Any thoughts would be great!

Well, I think I’ve sorted this out, and the issue was that the V1U footage was shot in regular 24p mode, not 24a – thus it came in as 24p with pulldown added up to 29.97, and those extra frames weren’t stripped out on import. So I can either reverse telecine everything, or just edit in a 29.97 timeline.

One question for FCP framerate experts out there – when you put such 24p footage (ie, 24p in a 60i wrapper) into a 23.976 timeline, how does FCP determine how to deinterlace the footage/remove pulldown? Like I said, most of my footage was fine, but definitely not all. And I swear there were clips that would play smoothly (deinterlaced correctly) sometimes, and be jittery (deinterlace incorrect) other times!

    Thanks!
