  • Pulldown issue from 60i to 24p in FCP???

Posted by Sebastian Lee on June 24, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Here’s my issue and so far what I’ve done below:

    – I shot for the 1st time w/ the XDCam EX1 in SP 1080/24p mode. (I usually shoot 24p in HVX and edit in FCP)

    – So, I used the XDcam Transfer, brought it into FCP and started editing.

    – When I outputted to QT, I noticed “horizontal lines” in my footage.

    – So, I searched the forums and people told me to “remove pulldown” or “reverse telecine” in Compressor, then start editing in FCP.

    – Now, when I output to QT, the footage is “stuttering” & I see a “jelly thingy” going on in the background.

    – Someone said, when I create a DVD it will automatically fix itself, so I took my QT in Compressor, used Best encode 90min, brought it into DVD Studio Pro, BUT nothing has changed.

CAN SOMEONE LET ME KNOW WHAT I’M DOING WRONG or AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

    – Should I just edit in 60i codec, BUT what do I do about the horizontal lines?

    – OR should I edit in 24p codec (23.98), BUT how do I get rid of the stuttering & jelly background?

I have clients waiting for a rough cut, ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

    Thanks

Is there any particular reason you shot in SP mode? HQ mode records native 1080p24, while SP mode records 24p over 1080i60 with 3:2 pulldown. If you’re planning on editing in a native 24p sequence, shooting in HQ is the way to go.

Since you have to deal with what you’ve already shot, you’ll have to remove the 3:2 pulldown that’s present on your footage if you want to cut in a native 24p sequence. There are many advantages to using a native 24p workflow, including the ability to make native 24p DVDs that will look better than the alternative.

If you haven’t had success using Compressor to do the reverse telecine, try this instead:

First transcode your footage to ProRes 1080i60 in Compressor, then use Cinema Tools to perform reverse telecine on the ProRes clips. You’ll have to manually guide the process by selecting the the A frame in each clip to be processed, as the EX1’s SP mode doesn’t use Advanced Pulldown.

    Great info Alan!

    I have similar problem…

Shot AVC-Intra and on import to FCP it transcoded to ProRes 422. (This was before native support of the codec.)

So now I have 422 footage at 59.94, but it was shot in 24p mode. (We were going HDSDI out of Varicam, which sends 59.94 no matter what, so recording native 24p wasn’t possible.) So now I have the classic stuttery video.

When I try to reverse telecine in CinemaTools, it tells me the footage is in no known NTSC frame rate and therefore it won’t work.

    Any thoughts?
