Puff…Smoke or Cloud Effect
Posted by Daniel Elder on July 12, 2006 at 2:03 pmI have a logo titled puff, what I’d like to do is have the mask be smoke or clouds that fill in the logo gradually, is there a way that I can pull this off in After Effects?
Thanks

July 12, 2006 at 2:21 pmI’d try Trapcode Particular, making smokelets stick to a “wall” or “floor” layer that matches the shape of the logo, then possibly fading in the real logo.
Or you could emit smokelets from a layer (one that has the shape of the logo), then reverse the playback to make it look as if they are assembling. It depends on what you want to see.
Or you could just have the smoke emitting from the center, but use a logo layer as a track matte. The smoke could emit from a point, and oval or a layer.
I’ve found that working with smoke takes a bit of time to get it looking natural.

July 12, 2006 at 5:14 pmI have it working on some level an it looks pretty cool. What settings would I use in particular to make the smoke rise slowly, and start thin and become denser??
Thanks

July 12, 2006 at 5:30 pmIn the physics>air settings, you should be able to give some Y velocity to the wind.
As for the density …. you can’t make it become denser per se, but you can make each particle bigger (size over life) or more opaque (opacity over life). You can also make the emitter emit more particles over time by keyframing the number of particles it emits.

September 26, 2011 at 8:50 pmI am trying to achieve a similar smoke effect as well…but several small puffs, as if coming from a factory. Right now I have a good cloud/smoke stream going upward…anyone know how to create puffs?
