  • Proxy workflow alternative needed to enable exporting AAF

    Hi all,

I’m about to start on a short film editing project. The set up is such that I need to edit 4K ProRes footage from Sony A7s2 (very heavy) and also need to export an AAF or OMF so that the sound designer can work on the project on other softwares as well. My system can take native 4K editing up to h.264 but Movs are too heavy for native editing (even playback).

As far as I know, proxy workflow to work with heavy footage doesn’t support exports to AAF (Check ‘attaching new media’ in this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/premiere-pro/using/proxy-workflow.html#AttachProxiesandReconnectFullResolutionMedia).

I have been trying to find a solution. I thought I could transcode (through ingest settings) the clips and save them in a similar folder order on a different drive. Then work with the light transcoded files in my timeline. Later when I want to bring back the raw footage, I can create a 4K sequence, copy and paste the edited sequence’s clips in it and ‘re-link’ them with the raw footage on the other drive (keeping same filenames). Is this possible/advisable?

I would really appreciate suggestions. If there’s any other alternative to the proxy workflow which allows me to export AAfs as well.

    Thanks 🙂

I think you’re misunderstanding the proxy workflow. Your proxy files are used only for efficient editing and playback within your project. All exports, including AAF and OMF, would be your original media and not the proxies.

I would recommend that you create Cineform proxies of your 4k files and just make sure your aspect ratio matches. Use this chart as a guide:

I agree with Greg on this.

When you AAF audio for ProTools, the files are from the original.

Even with the Proxy workflow…the audio is NEVER touched…never converted to an “audio proxy” format. The only files affected are video files. So if you make low res proxies of 4K H.264 files, the audio is the exact, original quality. Because audio takes up very VERY little space.

Thank you so much! I came across multiple pages on adobe websites and also tutorial videos which claimed using proxy workflow is not recommended when taking out an AAF or XML. But I suppose I misunderstood. I shall do a test and hope it works out. Thanks to Eric and Shane as well 🙂
