working on 10.9, trying to figure out the best way to have the original media stored on an external drive while editing (on a plane) with the proxies on my system drive.

Haven’t imported from camera or created the proxies yet.

    Easy.

Assuming the media is already on the external drive (if not move it there first in finder) then just deselect the option to copy files to the event. This will create a bunch of references and leave the original files alone.

Transcoded media will be stored in the Event folder, so if you want that on your system drive just start the event there.

So if I’m importing from a camera, then create new event…import from cam, create new event on system drive, go to finder and import references from event folder in original media folder, create proxy from that?

    Close.

Import from cam. Create New Event on system drive, and make sure to uncheck copy files into event folder (that leaves them in place and creates your references). Do select create proxy media (that will create proxy media on your system drive). Hit ok, let FCPX do the work.

If you forget to create the proxy on import, you can always do it later.
