  • Proxies don’t fit Program Monitor window

I am working as an assistant on a project being shot in 4K(4096 x 2160) on Arri Alexa. We are editing the footage by creating proxies of the resolution 1920 x 1080.

The proxies, however, have to be scaled up to 107% for them to fit the full window of the Program Monitor. We are using the ARRI Alexa 1080p sequence preset.

I know it isn’t much of an effort to just scale all video files to 107%, but I am just curious to know why this would be happening.

It would be great if somebody can tell me the reason behind this.

    Thank you!

    1920 x 1080 is 16:9 but 4096 x 2160 isn’t.

Are your proxies letterboxed, cropped or stretched. It matters.

No, the proxies are not letterboxed, cropped or stretched.

So this is happening because the 4096 x 2160 isn’t 16:9, but the proxies are?

It’s not possible that the proxies are not letterboxed, cropped or stretched/squeezed. It has to be one of them. Your original footage is wider than 16:9. If the video appears normal and there are no thin black bars at the top and bottom, then the sides have been cropped off…or you have squeezed the wider frame within 16:9, where it will appear slightly stretched vertically.

It sounds to me that your footage is letterboxed and to make it fill the monitor you are zooming in to 107.

You should make proxies that match your film aspect ratio.

I made a few customs ingest presets that solves this problem for 4 common aspect ratios, you can download them here on my site: https://meetmichaelhenry.com/blog/2019/10/5/creating-proxies-for-footage-of-any-aspect-ratio-in-premiere-pro

also, here’s a chart of aspect ratios and their proper proxy sizings.

Thanks for this. Any chance of getting a higher res version as not all the numbers are visible.
