Providing YUV420p H.264 Quicktimes to Developer…How?

Hi there.
I have created some motion videos to be used within an iPhone app. The developer has asked for H.264 Qucktimes with the “pixel format YUV420p”.

I have no idea what this is. I have tried to research this, and have come away with a super basic understanding of YUV vs RGB… though no real answers.

My main question is : If I use Media Encoder to export quicktimes using H.264 compression, will this be using YUV420p? Is H.264 always YUV or can it be RGB? Do I need to use a different program? And lastly, how can I tell if my quicktimes are YUV or RGB? After Effects somewhere?

A quick Google shows ffmpeg to be the tool you should be looking at.

Thanks for the reply Roland. I know of ffmpeg (this is what the framework the app is being built off).

Though I am not comfortable using command line to run programs.

Instead I am using adobe media encoder to create my H.264’s. Do you know if H.264 Quicktimes exported using media encoder are YUV420p?

From my research currently all H.264’s are YUV, and most are YUV420 as YUV422 is not widely supported… Not sure though…

Hi Jonathan, there are front-end GUIs for ffmpeg. I’ve not used one for ages so you’ll have to dive in, to see what’s currently the best out there –

I would think that Adobe’s h264 is RGB but it’s just a guess as I don’t see Adobe having a good reason to provide anything else for the majority of its users.

Hey Roland.

Thanks for your time. I I have had a look at FFMPEGX etc, though they seem to offer the same functionality as Media Encoder.

Having spent a couple hours reading different tech papers on it, I THINK H.264 is always YUV420p and cannot support RGB. Even ProRes is YUV, unless you’re using ProRes4444.
