Protection for a Title / Concept
What are the industry norms for protecting a televison series? In other words what keeps people from creating a new series about busting out of Alcatraz in the 1950’s and also calling it “Prison Break”??

you copyright the concept. This just means they’ll tweek just a bit when they hork it. lol
Trademark the name and logo. Much more expensive than a copyright but it keeps em from creativly taking your stuff.
Honestly, I have never submitted a show to any network without seeing something that looks very familiar the next season. These things just keep em from straight up stealing it.
The whole thing otta cost ya less than 3k…. 2500 being for the registered trademark.
You can do much of this online now without an atty at all. I’d do this with the copyright but let a copyright atty handle the trademark.
Also, once your trademark is registered, be aware that you will get a boatload of spam trying to get big money from you for an international trademark. Discard these letters… your already set at that point.
