    Question in brief:
On the Avid, is it possible to isolate a hard drive so that no one will be able to tamper with the OMFI material on it (digitize onto it or delete from it)?

    Question in detail:
I work at a news channel where we use the avid Adrenalin for report editing as well as for graphic wrapping of the headlines/promo’s etc. We do not use a UNITY server but rather the built in hard drives on the comp.
The footage digitized for reports is deleted once the report has aired, but there is an entire graphic package of the show that is in continuous daily use, so it remains on the drive and is not supposed to be deleted. Every once in a while we find that one or more of the GFX element’s media has been accidently deleted by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. We’ve tried many times putting up signs and talking to people working on the avid to be aware of what they are deleting but it’s not working. We keep coming across the dreaded [OFFLINE MEDIA] screen.
What I would like to do is to form an OMFI of all the necessary GFX that we use and put it on one hard drive. Then somehow create a situation where no digitizing or deleting on that drive would be possible. All report work and digitizing would be done on the other drives and there should be no accidental deleting or tapering with the OMFI on that ‘protected’ drive. I know it’s possible to ‘lock’ or isolate the system drive (C:) on the [media creation] option, but I was told it is not advisable to put any important material such as GFX kit, on the system drive.
    1) I would like to know if there is an option to use a drive ONLY for the GFX kit and somehow prevent others from being able to digitize anything else onto it.
    2) Will it be ok to use the system drive (C:) to store the OMFI of the GFX kit and then lock it via the [Media Creation] tool.
    3) Does anyone who is working similarly (graphic kits that need to always be visible and not be deleted) has any creative idea on how to resolve this.

    Any comment is welcome,

I think the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to do this is to create a virtual drive.

On your media drive, create a folder called “Graphics Kit”.

Within the “Graphics Kit” folder, create an “OMFI MediaFiles” folder.

Locate the OMFI files that respresent your graphics kit and move them to this folder.

Open Notepad and create a text file that says:

    subst G: E:\Graphics Kit

where “G:” is the available drive letter for the virtual drive and “E:” is the letter of your current media drive.

Save this notepad file with a “.bat” extension. You can place it in your “Startup” folder and it will launch and create the virtual drive automatically.

When you launch your Avid, it will detect the virtual drive and database it for you.

All you have to do then is lock that folder and your graphics are untouchable. You can also easily make a backup copy of them.

    or…

lock the clips at bin level,

    or

get all your gfx in one bin, export as omf and just suck them back in when needed

    or
use Media Databe Viewer (freeware) to copy the mediafiles to a safe location, and just drag them back into the media files folder when necessary

    Joe hi,
I followed your instructions and managed to setup a virtual drive. I created an OMFI Media Files folder and put into it the GFX kit media files.
I did not, however, understand completely what you meant by ‘locking the folder’. I tried setting the folder as a ‘read only’ at the folder properties, but when I turned on the AVID it still let me digitize onto it and delete from it. so I’m thinking maybe I’m doing something wrong…
Maybe you can explain what you mean by ‘Lock’ the folder and how to do it?
    Thanks,
    Shai.
