[Ken Matson] “I know serious hackers can copy anything – I’m just interested in stopping the average Mom/Dad from copying the dance recital for their friends.”
I think you’re underestimating the state of the art for DVD copy software. Any Mom/Dad and copy any DVD using freely available software. You don’t need to even know how to spell “hacker”. Using copy protection software will only make the vendor who sold it to you rich. It will do nothing to stop copying of your DVD’s.
What you need to do is make your product more attractive. The guy who videos my daughter’s dance recital asks $50 a copy. That’s $50 for a DVD that contains 95% of stuff I don’t care about just to see my daughter’s one or two dances. I buy it because I’m a videographer and I understand all the hard work that goes into it, but it’s not worth the price. I’m sure that no one buys more than one copy at that price.
So you have to ask yourself, how can you make them want to buy more than one copy? Perhaps you charge $25 for the first copy, and $10 for each additional copy? If you package it nicely they will want it just to have a nice package to give to family and friends. Isn’t it better to make less for additional copies than loose the sale all together? You just need to be creative in your marketing.
You can’t stop them from copying but you can entice them to buy more. 😉
