ProRess 422
Posted by Tel Jaba on February 28, 2009 at 11:28 amHello everyone
I am going to be working on my first HD project soon, And I’m preparing myself to that. the material that I am going to be working with is being shot of Sony EX 3 (HQ 1920×1080 25p)
and I was wondering what would the workflow be after transfaring and importing the media into fCP?
what is ProRes 422 and when and how do I do that?
I would appreciate it if you could explain the ProRes to me in simple words!!
many thanks in advanceTel Jaba replied 17 years, 2 months ago 4 Members · 5 Replies -

February 28, 2009 at 1:53 pmProRes is a visually lossless codec you can transcode to using Sony’s plugin for XDCAM EX footage. It will look the same as the original, but it will render a ton faster at the cost of disk space. You can import the files using the Sony plugin, and choose them to be prores instead of the GOP structured media that is shot with that camera. It’s MPEG-2 in fact.
You’ll need to go to Sony’s website, and in the support area for that camera to get these free applications, there’s a pdf or something too with them to show you how to set them up. There are two flavors of ProRes too… ProRes, and ProRes HQ. The HQ version should be used if your material has a lot of fast action in it, otherwise just use the other… file sizes are larger with the HQ version, but they won’t look much better than the standard version if there’s little or “normal” sorts of movement in the footage. (fast pans would look better for example in the HQ version, or fast movement like race cars etc…)

Understand that for the EX cameras you will need the latest version of FCP (6.05)
SxS driver and the XDcam Transfer tools/ FCP plugin.all of which can be found here.

No, that is incorrect.
Both versions of ProRes are 10bit.gary adcock

February 28, 2009 at 8:54 pmthank you so much for all your help
I just found out that my producer was advised by apple that we work in SD which will be faster and take less space on hard disk and when we are done with the editing we can “upres” to HD by deleting all the media and reconnecting to the HD!!
is that correct?
what about color correction? is that done before or after the “upres”
is the “upres” an easy thing to do?appreciate all your help
