    How is it that HDV is only about 3.2MB/s (and indeed goes onto the tape at that data rate), but Prores somehow captures at a higher bitrate than the original source was acquisition at? That makes no sense to me… where does the extra data per second come from?????

    ProRes is a 10bit higher data rate codec than HDV. Hence the larger file sizes and larger data rate. It’s also a full raster codec rather than anamorphic which is what HDV and DVCPro HD codecs are.

    12MB/s is still miniscule compared to 135MB/s and up for uncompressed HD which is what the ProRes and ProRes HQ codecs replace.

    There’s also things like HDV being an 8-bit codec, and ProRes 10-bit…HDV having a 4:2:0 color space, and ProRes having 4:2:2.

    So it doesn’t matter if you capture this lesser codec into the greater one…you can’t reduce the size of the greater one. Pour a bottle of beer into a keg…you have the keg. Sorry that you started out with a bottle of beer, but the keg can’t be reduced to fit. You can pour it into a mini-keg…ProRes LT.

    It’s all a bit nuts considering it only reaches our tvs at like 19mbs lol
    Cheers tho guys, but 3 questions; is it still correct and good to use it with hdv? Also because of the bigger data rates/ bit rates could it look almost better than hdv? (sort of like a post production nanoflash- same filming methods and camera but better output?)

    Yes, but not necessary. You can edit HDV as HDV, it just slows the computer a little when it comes to rendering. And it is a better colorspace for when you color correct, or add effects. It just won’t ADD any quality. The quality is what it is. You can also set your RENDER SETTINGS to ProRes…so edit HDV, but render ProRes.

    No. Once you compress to the HDV codec…that quality is gone. Can’t get it back. It just adds a better color space to render color correction to.

    That’s different. That’s BYPASSING the HDV compression, taking the signal and compressing to a better codec. Once you shoot to the HDV codec, you are in that 8-bit 4:2:0 color space.
