So I have a Panasonic AJ-HD1200A & Final Cut Studio, explain to me why I should consider workflows using the ProRes422 codec?

Well, when shown in a side by side comparison with uncompressed HD on a HUGE screen, they were virtually indistinguishable. I could see slight compression…but it was HUGE…I mean 20 foot screen.

This could not be said of DVCPRO HD…you’ll see the difference right away.

And we’ll know more when we see the demo on the floor tomorrow, and when we get our beady paws on it.

Will there be support for loading via a BlackMagic Decklink HD?

We just got an overview of this new release…let’s wait until the week progresses and more is known. And you might have to wait until it is released and hear what people say.

    Or call and ask Decklink.

We’ll all need to test this side by side when FCP 6 starts shipping. That’s the very first thing I’m going to test when it arrives as we’re a full on DVCPro HD workshop. Will it be better to stay native DVCPro HD or use the ProRex 4:2:2 codec? Don’t know just yet, will need to be tested and also go through Network QC to see if the product passes.

Just wondering if there was news that day, that’s all. Yeah, I might give Black Magic a call. We’re not getting FCP 6 for a month, anyway… but I’m smack in the middle of making a choice between a few setups, and the decision is time-sensitive.

    Walter,

Are they positioning ProRes422 as a finishing codec, or an intermediate format? My first thought was that this was an intermediate format for offlining, but you mention Network QC.

I really think they are pushing it as a finishing codec because of the quotes from Sony and Panasonic endorsing the codec, plus the push of how “clean” the 10bit 4:2:2 codec is. Can’t wait to play with it, I honestly don’t know if I’m demo’ing FCP 5 or 6 in the AJA booth.

More real time, true 10bit with out having to deal with the latest iPod update.

DVCPROHD is a camera codec not a graphics codec, as it was never intended for extended Post manipulation.

Also so we have the ability to do all of this on a laptop with the New IoHD.

Thanks Walter – sounds interesting. Can’t wait for it to start shipping so I can get my hands on it.

Nothing like having no idea what you are doing in front of thousands of people until the very last second, huh?! Have fun!
