February 14, 2009 at 12:07 amthe CalDigit VR for 2TB is around $700, so I’m certain that the total price would be less than $1k.
Also it compares really favorably to the g-tech brand machines, the speeds are fantastic, the RAID options it offers (both 0 and 1) are more than other brands, and basically is all-around a machine built to LAST, rather than to be disposable.
I mean, check out this comparison chart:

Hope they’re better nowadays. They were horrible in our testing a few years ago when they first came out.

We had a Firewire box called the CalDigit VR two years ago.

With all do respect Walter, if you are going to post something here I would appreciate you get your facts correct, especially as a forum leader.

As you can see from this post the CalDigit VR just started shipping. Perhaps you got this NEW CalDigit product confused with something else.

“My facts are 100% straight. Two years ago we were shipped three boxes from CalDigit at the request of CalDigit. All three were called “CalDigit VR” and they were triple interface boxes. We ran them in a RAID for about two weeks before we had one box fail.
We shipped that one unit back to CalDigit for testing. That was the last we heard from them. Three weeks later we shipped the other three back and we do not run CalDigit in our shop at all. I had two or three SATA arrays fail in our shop and we have since switched to MaxxDigital which has given us excellent performance to cost ratio.
Just because a product is released to the public last week doesn’t mean I haven’t already used it. Unfortunately due to NDA’s I’m not permitted to say on a public forum what is and is not running in our shop at any given time. For the VR’s we were not under an NDA and I honestly didn’t even know they were not released yet.
Are there any other facts you would like me to clear up?

February 16, 2009 at 7:14 pmWalter I don’t want to make a big deal out of this, but you are mistaken with the products that you are talking about. I don’t want to confuse people who come here to get correct information.
[walter biscardi] “My facts are 100% straight. Two years ago we were shipped three boxes from CalDigit at the request of CalDigit. All three were called “CalDigit VR””
The products that you were sent were called:
FirewireVR
S2VR Duo
S2VR HDI understand that these products have similar names to CalDigit VR, but unfortunately the only “VR” is the same.
Walter you tested these units before I came to CalDigit, so I’m not sure about your experience. I know that CalDigit has hundreds of satisfied customers includes the majority of the leaders on this forum. The CalDigit VR is a quadruple interface 2 drive array, that is truly unique and powerful. You should really check it out. No offense to MAXX (whom I know they guys very well) but I think you will like the CalDigit VR a little more as there is nothing like it on the market.

“Yes, you are correct then, it was a Firewire VR.
[Jared Picune] “Walter you tested these units before I came to CalDigit, so I’m not sure about your experience”
I’ll educate you then, to the best of my
S2VR HD Failed in less than three months. It was replaced.
2nd S2VR HD Failed in less than three months, CalDigit said they would get all my media off the array and ship me the media back. Never happened.
3rd S2VR HD Failed and again they promised to replace the footage again. It never happened.
They shipped me the three VR’s and asked me to run them in a RAID, all three units striped together. one unit failed and we were supposed to get another one back to continue testing. It never happened, never heard from them. So we shipped the other two back and that was the last we heard from CalDigit until I was asked to test what I believe is the HD One or something like that. I declined.
Shane Ross loves the gear and recommends CalDigit as do others on this forum. Based on my previous history with the CalDigit, I don’t use their products and don’t recommend them. Having a good product is just one part of the equation. Having good tech support to back up that product is even more important. At the time I tested CalDigit, tech support was very poor and I honestly have not had a reason to test them again.

February 17, 2009 at 3:06 pmwalter,
Not to discount your negative experience with CalDigit, but I would like to offer a differing opinion. I have two of the S2VR HD boxes, an HD Element and the RAID card. I have used the Firewire VR. All of the products that I have had experience with have been flawless.
Two years ago I had an array stolen out of a car. I was in a pinch and needed to get it replaced ASAP. I decided to try CalDigit based on Shane’s recommendation among others. I ordered one from a dealer and had a terrible experience. I was in a real bind so I called CalDigit directly. They had to build me an S2VR HD so they sent me a loaner FirewireVR so that I could meet a deadline. A week later I had my S2VR HD and sent the Firewire unit back.
I am sorry that you had a bad experience and I am sure that Jared’s response to you did nothing to help.
The HDElement is a great box and I am looking forward to really putting it through it paces.
Ken
