Prores to H.264 color shift
I am trying to export my Prores 422 file to H.264 encoded Mov or Mp4 file. But the files are slightly rich in reds. I have used compressor as well as Mpegstreamclip for conversion.
This is happening first time to me. Herer is the screenshot with all the three files.
What’s going wrong?

I can’t remember the specifics of H364, but if I remember rightly its colour space is typically 4:2:0- its a pretty awful codec for retaining things like color accuracy. However there are ways of encoding to higher profile versions such as 4:2:2 but I cant remember them… :s

Sadly, this is a known bug that has been around FOREVER. Here are some links that talk about it. The main consensus is that you can either shift the gamma before you compress it to offset the h264 shift, or there are some tweaks you can do to the converted file to make it appear correctly. Lastly, some people have had luck with the x264 codec. It is free.

I googled the issue and found a good piece of advice, thanks to shane ross. I was watching these files using quicktime player and that’s where the problem was. I installed quicktime 7 and the file made from H.264 preset in Compressor looks perfectly fine.Pradip Patil

I meant QuickTime palyer 10.

Even with QT 7 you will still notice a gamma shift Pradip. The gamma filter in Compressor will allow you to make slight compensation adjustments, just be sure to use it lightly as a little adjustment goes a long way. And, test it with short clips, as it may take you a few attempts to get exactly the setting you desire.

Thanks for the info David. For the time being, our requirements are met. I will definitely try what you have said. This particular project has been an eye opener about the 5D world. 🙂
