  • Prores to DNxHD MXF?

    Hi all,

I’ve scoured the web looking for a solution and have yet to come across anything. I’m on a series that gets onlined and laid out to HDCam tape off a Prores 422 (HQ) source. The tape then goes to channel where it gets transcoded to DNxHD 120Mbps MXF OP1a format (through Avid). They want to skip the tape and go straight to the MXF format from the Prores source. I’ve looked at Episode and it can only supply the XDCam MXF at maximum of 50mbs. There’s no sign of the DNxHD codec. Is there a tool out there (besides Avid itself) that will allow me to create this file? I’ve read that ffmpeg can do it but I have no idea where to even begin when it comes to getting result through terminal input. Is there another tool that I can use/try/buy that will allow me to achieve this export?

    Thanks for any help guys!

You can simply dowload the Codec for AVID DNX HD from this website for QuickTime – then you can also export in those formats:

    Good Luck!

Thanks Sascha, can’t believe it was that simple. My next problem however is this codec is now contained within a quicktime wrapper. I’ll need to test this but I have a feeling the system they’re using (Ardome) cannot import .mov’s (they seem very anti quicktime in general). Do you know of anything that can re-wrap this quicktime in an MXF container? I know of mxf4mac but there doesn’t seem to be a trial version available to test.

    Thanks!

    Sorry, no can help.
Usually I deliver my Finals in .mov files.
Do you have AE? There’s many more options for export than just the .mov’s.

[Dale Vedder] “DNxHD 120Mbps MXF OP1a format… I’ve looked at Episode and it can only supply the XDCam MXF at maximum of 50mbs. There’s no sign of the DNxHD codec.”

If you deliver an MOV-wrapped DNxHD file with all the proper settings, the Avid should be able to fast-import it — re-wrapping the DNxHD elements in MXF as it imports, without re-encoding.

If you create a new encoder in Episode, select the MXF Op1a wrapper, and choose QuickTime as the video codec, Episode will let you choose from all the QuickTime encoders on the system — including DNxHD if it is installed on your system. I don’t have an Avid here to verify that the output is compliant, but please let us know if you test this and it works.
