Prores to CatDV to FCP workflow
Hi All,
I have a workflow question that I am sure some of you know the answer to. We have a library full of 1″ tapes (Remember those??) and will be encoding to ProRes422.
We will import those clips into CatDV, add metadata and most important, locator points and in/out point within the CatDV Event Markers tool.
We will want to export the event markers/in-out data into FCP batch list and import the ProRes clips. This will hopefully give us subclips for each of the event markers.

Good news, this is the most basic and fundamental feature of CatDV. Check out the demos online (there’s a long one at catdvexperts.com) or have JB&A or your dealer show you how this works.
You can move subclips or markers to FCP from CatDV. You can choose which (or both) to create in CatDV. That said, other than just CatDV there are a lot of considerations in this type of project.
Markers and subclips have very different behaviors and impact editorial workflows in different ways so you should also consider your editing project style and footage use-cases before you choose to subclip or mark.
If you have a tape library program with metadata in it, you might want those records imported into CatDV before you start so that you don’t have to type everything again.
Finally, give some serious thought as to how you are going to secure these files long term. The good thing about tape is that it’s far more stable than hard disks, as we all know.
Get your dealer to demo this workflow for you and have it planned and scoped before-hand as you’re about to commit several hundred to thousand hours of labor to this operation.
