I am successfully capturing HDV to the ProRes422 codec on a G5. Here is my setup:

    G5 quad
    Rorke fiberchannel array
    JVC BR-HD50 HDV deck
    Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme
    Convergent Design HD-Connect MI.

I am taking the HDMI output of the deck and converting it to SDI. The signal goes from HDV 720p30 to ProRes 720p59.94.

I have captured from a number of tapes. The clips were anywhere from 2 seconds to 6 minutes in length. They are much sharper using the SDI input than the component analog input.

I had presumed that the Multibridge did not convert to ProRes in hardware but perhaps it does. Either that or the G5 quad has more processing power that I thought.

Anyway, I wanted to share this to show that ProRes can indeed be captured on a G5 right now.

[Post Office Video] “I had presumed that the Multibridge did not convert to ProRes in hardware but perhaps it does. Either that or the G5 quad has more processing power that I thought.”

Guessing the computer’s processor was faster than you thought. Because Decklink doesn’t have a hardware ProRes Converter. Only the I/O HD does, and it ain’t out yet.

Lots of people are reporting success capturing with a quad G5. That’s good news for those who have that.

I’d like to know what it’s like using “Edit to Tape” with ProRes HQ HD.

On my dual G5, I can capture ProRes SD no problem, but using “Edit to Tape” gives me a dropped frames error every 3-4 minutes or so.

Has anyone tried capturing with pro res on a Mac Book Pro and then editing on a G5?

    interesting post office.

I have the exact same setup as you but i have a ciprico 4210 4gb fibre channel array.

I captured 720P from my brhd50u via component and capture fails with dropped frames within 5 seconds.

    Running:
    G5 quad
    4gb ram
    multibridge extreme
    fcp6

can you go through the steps start to finish for me?

did you capture prores HQ or SQ?

I would love it if my system could do that and now it sounds like it should.

720p60 is actually larger than 1080p24. But not by much.
