  • ProRes Proxy – use for collaboration?

I’m struggling to understand if (and how) ProRes Proxy would facilitate my workflow. Currently, we’re working with ProRes 422, in FCP X, and are about to involve an editor in Japan.

One option, of course, would be to send him all the files on a drive (complete Event and Project). Or, we could transfer all the files (around 25 GB), but, obviously, the up/download would take a while.

But how about Proxy? Could I simply provide ProRes proxy files, let him do the edit, get the Project back from him, then export as ProRes 422 using the original files in the Event?

If that’s not an option, would ProRes 422 LT be good enough for a BlueRay DVD output?

Thanks to everyone who can share any advice!

As long as you generate the Proxy files from within FCPX, and send them those, then yes.

You could even send the Event as well. He could then send back a Project, and you should be able to reconnect to the full resolution material.

Thanks, Jeremy. So just to clarify, I’d import the files into FCPX and check the “Create proxy media” option. Then simply send him the Proxy files from the ‘Final Cut Events’ folder – correct?

Because of the size I’d love to avoid sending the entire Event, including the original media.

More or less. Don’t send him the Final Cur Events folder as that will include all the Events on that hard drive along with any higher resolution media you have imported to the Event.

In the Event folder, you will see a “transcoded media” folder and insinde there there’s a “proxy media” folder.

You will send the ‘YourEventNameFolder’ (which is in the Final Cut Events folder on your hard drive) with the “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” in it, along with a Transcoded Media > Proxy media folder.

    Make sense?

On his end, he will put the ‘YourEventNameFolder’ in his own “Final Cut Events” folder.

He will also have to check the preference to use Proxy Media in the Final Cut Pro > Preferences > Playback section of the FCPX prefs.

Test this with a clip or two so both of you are comfortable with the workflow before sending the whole thing.
