I edit mostly in Premiere Pro CS5 but also use Final Cut Pro when I have to. I use Premiere Pro on a PC and Final Cut on a Hackintosh I built myself.

I will be editing an upcoming project that will be shot on an HPX 170 and recorded into an AJA Ki Pro Mini in Prores 4:2:2. I prefer to use Premiere Pro, by a huge margin. Will I be able to import the Prores footage directly from compact flash cards? If not, can I import from the compact flash cards into a mac and transfer to PC with external hard drives?

    Hello Jimmy,

You will be able to read ProRes files on your PC, but not write ProRes files. You could look to using DNxHD (Avid’s codec, which is a free download from their site) or the Cineform codec (which isn’t free). Both of those read and write well using Premiere on a PC.

If you want to import ProRes files, edit them, then export to a ProRes file, you’ll have to stick with Final Cut or Premiere Pro on a Mac.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I do not need to export as Prores. Can I edit the Prores footage in Premiere Pro CS5 on a PC or will it first have to be converted to something else first? And what would I use to convert it?

You can edit in ProRes, no conversion needed as long as you have QuickTime installed.
