  • ProRes for SD Beta SP?

Posted by Liam Lawyer on April 28, 2009 at 11:29 pm

    Greetings all!

I am curious if anyone out there is using ProRes for their SD 525/ 29.97 projects in place of an 8/10bit Uncompressed format?

I saw a thread from about 2 years ago when a bunch of you chimed in about it, but this was early on in ProRes life. Walter – in particular you mentioned that you were trying it out.

I plan to do some testing soon, but would love any heads up on what to look for or ‘gotchas’ in the workflow

FYI the project is using footage from shows finished onto Betacam SP and will be delivered on SD.

    Thanks!

We use ProRes for everything and make SD DVDs daily. It works great.

    Have a wonderful day.

What system are you on? Intel quad? 8 core?

Are there any issues with exporting or transcoding to other formats like h264?

    Thanks much!!!

We’re doing this almost exclusively now, just ProRes though, not ProRes HQ.

Walter and Chris, your posts (“We use ProRes all the time”) has me all confused. We are an exclusively DV house for budget reasons but using ProRes has simply never occurred to me. Got a pointer to a site that would give me more than the basic information (I mean, besides the manual, been there, read that, made a t-shirt out of the Text chapters)?

ProRes makes sense if you are coming from a much higher bandwidth like DigiBeta or Betacam. ProRes ends up being 2 to 5x smaller than 8 or 10 bit uncompressed SD.

DV files are much smaller and the quality is lower so you would gain nothing by loading ProRes.
