ProRes CPU Speed Error
I was doing some test edits with different HD codecs at 1080i on our brand-new Media 100 12.6 system today and ran into an issue with the Apple ProRes 422 codecs. The system lets me acquire them just fine, but when I try to play back the ProRes clips (both HQ and non-HQ), I get an error saying that the CPU was unable to process the video files. I even tried the clip at 720p and got the same result. I have no issue with the Media 100 HD 8 bit or DVCPro HD clips, so it can’t be my drive speeds. The odd thing is that, although I’m unable to play the clips in Media 100, I have no problem playing the ProRes clips back in QuickTime Player.
I followed Media 100’s installation instructions by first uninstalling the 12.5 version and then installing 12.6, and then installing the AJA LHe drivers (with restarts where instructed). After all of the Media 100 installations were complete, I proceeded with the Final Cut Studio 2 installation.
My system specs are as follows:
-MacPro 8-core 2.8GHz Xeon 5400
-OS 10.5.2
-6GB RAM
-G-Speed eS 2TB w/ G-Technology RAID card
-ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB
-Media 100 12.6
-AJA Kona LHe with current drivers
-Most current version of Final Cut Studio 2Also, although I have no problem playing back 1080i DVCPro HD clips, when I render a clip in that codec in 50% slow motion, the new slo-mo clip plays back black video. Very frustrating, as DVCPro HD was my fallback if ProRes didn’t work out!
Even though I have the 2.8GHz 8-core, I don’t see how that could not be fast enough to handle the ProRes codec. Could this possibly be an issue/bug with 12.6, the AJA drivers and the ProRes codec?
Any assistance on this would be sooooo appreciated. I was so excited to play around with some HD edits today, and now I’m bummed!
Thanks!
