ProRes codec upper field?
I’m a little confused about the upper field first and lower field first. Are sequences rendered one way or another? For example, if I change the sequence to ProRes, but I have all DV footage and also Quicktime Animation files, is it going to render everything one field or another? Is there a setting on which field it renders everything as? Is there anything I should be doing to make sure that the fields are right?
When I’ve been taking footage from DVDs lately, I’ve been taking whatever field that they were originally. I think that’s the right thing to do. Then I guess Final Cut would change it if it renders the whole sequence one way..?

Interlacing have no relation with the codecs, but with standards.
DV is not “lower First” because the DV codec is “Lower First” but because the DV standard fixed that would always set that field order.
So any codec could be used as Upper Lower or Progressive.
All SDs standards are Lower in NTSC, but in PAL land some are Upper and some Lower. All the non-progressive HD stuff is Upper, all around the world.

The Sequence codec doesn’t matters:
You will get the field order set in the Sequence Preferences.

Okay. So if I set the sequence to lower field order first (which it might already be), than I should make sure everything in my sequence is lower field order? For example, I created a few animations in AE which I don’t know what field order I selected. Should do them again with lower field first exported?

If editing in NTSC, you should have a 720×486 lower field first timeline.
Your 720×480 clips should have a center position of 0,1. This will alleviate any field order issues.
Fcp should do this automagically when you add a 480 clip to a 486 timeline.

I have a DV sequence right now but it will be changed to ProRes. The final output will be DVD.

DV is lower field first in NTSC as well.
If you are mixing footage and graphics, I would render lower field out of AE to keep the motion characteristics the same.
