ProRes 422 (HQ)
Posted by Bob Biestek on July 14, 2010 at 8:20 pmDoes AE 7.0 support ProRes 422 (HQ)? If not is there a download or plugin that I can get to bring my AE 7 up to speed?

July 14, 2010 at 8:24 pmProres only comes with Final Cut Pro. So it’s more about what version of FCP your running.

July 15, 2010 at 3:19 pmThanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I don’t have FCP so I have to let this project go by the way side.
Thanks again.

July 15, 2010 at 8:13 pmYou could always ask them to supply you with a different format, such as animation or uncompressed. On another note I learned from someone on twitter today that the adobe programs were not interpreting the ProRes 422 color info correctly and he had to go with uncompressed 10bit to keep the grade the same. May be another point to bring up to the potential client.

October 11, 2010 at 2:34 pmHello,
I am also having issues with Apple ProRes 422 and After Effects. I am running FCP 6 and AFX CS5 and the options are not available to me in either software! I believe I have been able to render ProRes from my laptop that has the same set-up as my Mac Pro but can’t from my Mac Pro.
I have tried downloading and installing the component but it doesn’t allow me to do so as it says there’s an older version already installed on the machine.
Frustrating as my current project requires all media to be output at ProRes and it’s a biggie! Any ideas anyone?
Best,

October 11, 2010 at 4:14 pmHello Dave,
Thank you so much for your swift comment! As it happens, I copied all the QT components from my laptop’s library (both MAC HD and user) to the Mac Pro’s libraries and it fixed the problem! I knew the moment I posted I’d find a solution!
Thanks again.
Best,

May 10, 2011 at 6:07 pmI’ve come across this roadblock to outputting finish quality graphics from my FCP editor on 2010 iMac. See image.

Re: rough FCP graphics output vs AE razor sharp output.
… The HDTV preset in AE is not equivalent to the AppleProRes422 format. This is potentially the issue. The recommended options were to convert the AE footage to the matching format OR drop the completed video into AE for final compositing.

I’d like not to do this finishing step. Is there a way to just output from FCP and get sharp graphics? I already have the ProRes codec viewer installed. I can view his mp4 output for client review. I’m using AE CS3 on a G5 2005 Powermac(not Intel architecture, if that matters), OS 10.5.8. I don’t see any ProRes options in my AE Output Module > Quicktime > Format Options. I’ve been output the Quicktime Animation codec so far.
