Prores 422 for SD as well?
Posted by Arnljot Bringedal on July 26, 2007 at 5:07 pmHey!
I normally edit Dv in an uncompressed timeline….
But:
Could I use prores instead, even though the footage is SD?
( Save space this way? )If yes – which prores quality setting?
If no: What timeline setting is best for DV Sd – if Im gonna do alot of grading etc..?
Thanks guys!

July 26, 2007 at 5:34 pmYup. ProRes HQ is 10 bit, ProRes Regular is 8 bit. Use HQ.

July 26, 2007 at 5:45 pmIndeed there are SD ProRes settings, and because they are 10-bit they will provide benefits for you, especially in preserving your graphics, and possibly some benefits when color grading.
Because you are in PAL land, the two 625 25 ProRes settings are your choices — one is (HQ), the other is normal. Check them out, I’ll bet they’re both very good. I would imagine you won’t need the HQ setting, which probably yields larger file sizes without any discenable change in quality.

I always opt for 10 bit.

Not really… I use 10-bit too whenever doing anything that’s important.

July 27, 2007 at 12:21 amSo is the HQ prores 10-bit and the non-hq 8-bit?
or is it medium quality (non-hq)

July 27, 2007 at 1:52 pmAre the ProRes PAL SD timelines upper or lower field? Or can you actually choose field order with ProRes codec?
Uncompressed timelines are upper field in PAL and DV is lower field and that makes it extremely confusing when using dv footage in uncompressed timeline, so I am interested if ProRes can help us overcome this inconvenience?
