ProRes / 23.98fps Issues
I’ve got a weird problem happening in FCP 6.0.4 and it’s driving me nuts. First, a little background: I’ve been processing a lot of footage in Shake the last few days (DV NTSC with pulldown removed to native 23.98), and because ProRes export out of Shake is broken (at least on my machine), I’ve been using the Animation codec, then transcoding that to ProRes with Compressor (mostly it’s a disk space issue – too much footage to keep it all in Animation).
Anyway, the files look fine when played back in Quicktime, but when I throw them on a 23.98 ProRes timeline in FCP, I get random skipped or repeated frames. It’s as if FCP is imposing its own strange pulldown cadence on the footage. I’ve tried creating a new timeline and the same thing happens. I’ve edited plenty of ProRes stuff before without issue… There seems to be no real rhyme or reason as to when the skipped or repeated frames occur. The repeated frames of course are an easy enough fix (though still irritating), but the skipped frames can’t really be worked around.
This is a project with a very definite (and looming!) deadline, so my temporary fix might just be buying another external drive to hold all the footage in the Animation codec. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
