  • Proper Way to setup System Files on a File Server with FCP

Posted by Devin Crane on August 24, 2009 at 6:19 pm

I’ve got 3 editors working off of a File Server via GigE each, and was wondering about the proper or best way to setup render, capture folders and waveform, thumbnail and autosave cache in FCP?

Right now I’ve given each Editor a Folder on the Shared drive that there Render, Autosave and ect files are saved to but when opened by another editor it looses all of the render footage even though it’s attached to the same drive. Should I have them all right to the same folder for renders? Is this safe to do if they are not working on the file at the same time? What about autosave and waveform Cache as well?

Also Sound Track Pro takes exceedingly long when working over Gig E, is there too much latency to not work on a DAS with STP?

    Thanks

are you using a NAS file server such as one by Lacie? or are you using a server like the Xserve or Mac Pro with direct attached storage?

are all folders available to all systems? if you open a project on Edit 2 that you created on Edit 1, can you see the Edit 1 render folder in Finder while you’re on Edit 2? you might be dealing with file permission issues. the NAS might also be creating a different path for each system that you can’t see. but without knowing the file system that its using, i can’t really answer your question. are just the render files offline, or do you have to reconnect all the media in the project?

when i install these systems, i set them up so everyone logs on with the same username. this way all files that are created are owned by all systems and users. i’m not sure how a NAS works under these circumstances. are you able to reconnect to your render files?

as for Autosave, Waveform and Thumbnail, i usually set those up to save locally. if you open a project and the thumbnails are not available, Final Cut should (although sometimes it doesnt) recreate those thumbnails pretty quickly. if the autosave is local, it will also write quicker, which the editors like. getting an SSD drive makes a huge difference! where ever you save your Autosave, just make sure you keep an eye on it. before you know it, it will be 50GB+ in size.
