I usually do my color correction/grading on PC using Vegas Video as it has color curves similar to those of Avid — meaning i can visually chose which part of the image i want to manipulate. This time i’m CCing a feature film so normal workflow wouldn’t work thus i’m forced to do all CC on FCP. Here is the problem, i want to keep blacks black but brighten dark blacks (the one between midtones and black)… IS there a way to do it withing FCP? If so how?

I forgot to add, right now i’m using 3-way CC and when i try to lift blacks quickly they get really milky.

Have you tried using the mids color controls? I rarely use the black level controls in the 3 way CC because it does make the picture foggy very quickly. The mids may be your answer.

Use the Levels filter after you’re all done with your CC. Set it to 98 or 97 most likely.

As a Symphony colorist, I can truly appreciate your predicament. Nothing beats the fine control of curves for stretching a precise area in the picture. The closest I’ve come in FCP is to use the two way and drive the mids up while keeping the black down.

You can use the color finesse plugin if you are really in a bind.

look at the numerical adjustment section of your CC effect. You will find a slider for low mid and high range adjustments. Not very precise but you can punch in numbers to fine tune if needed.

The real key to making this go faster is to turn on the “load” function in your timeline monitor window. This is available under the center pulldown menu at the top of the window.

This will cause whatever shot you park on in the timeline to automatically load in your viewer. This makes scrolling through and adjusting much easier.
