  • Proper Compressor Settings for 720p to SD DVD?

Posted by Chris Babbitt on June 26, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I just made an SD DVD from a video shot and edited in 720p. In Compressor’s Inspector, under Video Format, Compressor automatically chooses a field dominance of Bottom First, even though it was shot Progressive, so I changed it to Progressive. Now, my camera pans on the DVD look stuttery instead of smooth. So, I tried a test and took a clip and compressed it three ways: Progressive, Upper first, and Lower first. Both the upper and lower look smooth, but the Progressive is stuttery. So, what is the setting supposed to be? I’ve been told that all DVDs are interlaced regardless of what you start out with. Is that why Compressor defaults to Lower field first?

NTSC Standard definition is lower field first, so that’s what you want for an SD DVD if you’re in NTSC.

Thanks for clearing that up, Walter. I guess I was thinking that the settings were supposed to match the source footage.
