  • Proper Capture Settings/ Pulldown Question

I’m working on a project that was shot on DVCPro HD tapes, recorded in camera as 1080i with a 3:2 pulldown. We’re looking to work with 24P footage, and I was told that if you capture at 1080i60 and check the “remove advanced pulldown” box in the capture settings, that would be the best way to achieve this.

Is it a better bet to remove the pulldown at the time of capture or does it make more sense just to capture at 1080i60 and remove the pulldown post-capture in Cinema Tools (if at all)?

I keep reading things about adding pulldown but haven’t found anything about removing pulldown that was recorded. Am I on the right track?

Also, I was wondering if FCP 5 has the capability to capture with these settings or if FCP 6 is necessary (I haven’t found an exact answer online and apparently Apple Support no longer advises about FCP 5).

    Thanks.

No – this applies only to footage that was laid down with advanced pulldown, 2:3:3:2; this is different than standard pulldown, which is 2:3:2:3, and can’t be removed upon ingest without proper capture card.

Best way to do this is to determine the correct cadence, a-frame, etc, and remove standard pulldown in cinema tools. Alternatively, cinema tools can do a smart reverse telecine.
