    Hi

Just did a recent job with a F900,on which I used a Tiffen 1/4 black promist ,only had a Panasonic plasma monitor,be it a very expensive one!
I,ve used this filter before and with digibeta .Anyway the producer has commented that the image lacks definition and in that vain ,that softlight is not the way to go for HD.We were shooting 23.98p.And that previous rushes shot without a filter were looking much better.
But he is viewing on an LCD screen, but I would think a pretty good one.I cant get to see them myself unless i travel halfway around the globe.
I,d always been under the impression the everyone and their dog was trying to avoid the dreaded very sharp electronic video -ish image of HD,and I,d never shot digibeta let alone HD without a filter.1/8 or 1/4 black promist usually.
Does anyone have any experience with similar reports,or their own comments

    Thanks

First, this is the VariCam forum. There is a forum for the F900.

Second, you’ve cross-posted on at least three forums here. Please don’t do this.

    Now, on your problem.

Did you shoot tests and evaluate the results before the shoot? Was the image acceptable to you? To your client?

Did the client comment on your use of the filters before the shoot?

Did I understand you correctly that your client said you can’t use softlights with HD? Where do you find people like that?

I don’t believe it’s at all necessary to shoot with mist filters, at least not with the VariCam, which is what I use. I can imagine only rare circumstances that call for that kind of diffusion on a properly setup professional HD camera.

Of course your eye and your style may depend on the filters, but your client should know and approve that before you shoot.

    Good shooting!

Sorry I wasnt aware that multi posting was not allowed, just trying to get as much response as possible.

I was using the F900,but the question was also generally about HD.Yes not wanting softlight for HD is abit out there 😉

I had used the exact same camera with the same filter with no adverse comments on a previous shoot.so didnt need to test again.

But anyway thanks for your thoughts, happy shooting indeed!

What looks good and how do you make pictures people/clients like? It is indeed subjective.
Using a promist gives a look, one I usually like, that can’t be easily eliminated in post. On the other hand, a non-filtered image can be modified in post to give it a promist look.
In hind site, without a specific request for a promist by the director/client I would let the “filtering be done in post”. This may seem to some like a cope out…fix in in the edit…but in reality that is where a consistant look is controlled.
Saying that softlight should not be used in HD…well if someone says something like that, I would have to really question their ability to really articulate what they want or even what they see.
Fads, jargon and buzzwords make understanding each other harder when talking about making nice images.

I used 1/8 and 1/4 Black Promist filters extensively while shooting with 600

Thanks for the comments.Yes seeing the filter at a high stop/wide angle is something to check for.
