Project Won’t Load…Premiere Pro Locks Up

It looked promising for a little bit…but it still threw the same fit and locked the system up.

As I watch the Windows Task Manager, one of the processes that begins is the PhotoshopServer. I don’t know if that’s standard fare or not, but it’s shortly after it kicks in that the process uses enough memory it stops cold turkey.

This is terribly frustrating…I wasn’t smart enough to save a backup of my project list, and now I’m paying the price! I’ve been working on this project for over a week…already had 53 minutes edited (probably a 90 minute project) and tracked out to 18 segments.

It’s so close to loading up it’ll make you sick…about 98% loaded when it locks up. If there was just a way to go into an “edit” mode of the project file, I’d ditch out the segment that’s keeping it from loading.

Argh!!!!

So what version of Premiere are you working in ?

You say that even the auto-save copies won’t open ? Then it’s either that something in Premiere itself is corrupted, or a file inside your project was corrupted. Here’s what you could do…

1- Delete your preference files
2- Rename the folder where the clips in your project are located, forcing Premiere to load with the files offline, that’ll tell if one of your clips is corrupted (good luck on the next steps ;).

3-Delete your preview and peak files.

4- Reinstall Premiere, or upgrade to a newer version if you are not using the latest(try a trial)

I’m working in the 2.0 version of Premiere Pro. I’ve already tried the re-install and it didn’t work.
On your advice, I deleted the preview and peak files…where are the preference files?

Should I rename all the folders where the project has segments saved?

One of three things has happened since I started having problems…I imported an animated gif into the work area this morning (this is the last time I saved, then exited the program). I’ve defragged the V drive where all video clips and project clips are stored (nothing else on the drive…dedicated to video only–2 200 Gig drives RAIDed together), and I installed a small anti-spam service for Outlook (using the C drive only).

I meant rename the folder where all the clips / images / audio pertaining to your project are. If are in the same folder, you may have to move them. You can delete the preference files by Holding Ctrl+shift as you click on the program icon. You’ll know it worked if a “browse for additional plugins” prompt appears. Other than that, I guess a system restore wouldn’t hurt if none of these solve it 🙁

I’ll see if I can think of anything else.

I’d try deleting (or moving somewhere else) the animated gif you imported, 90% of the time I’ve found that the last imported piece of art BEFORE the save is the one that killed the project (and after watching the artists here try reloading Premiere, etc each time BEFORE trying this quick test I’d recommend it as a first, not last, step). It will open the project with the file off-line – then you can try to reimport it and save the project with a new name (to see if the problem recurrs)

When all else fails I vote for a system restore. That may be the easiest anyway. Just pick the day before your last edit (you’ll lose the last session) and restore.
