    Old topic but still confusing!!!

I’m about to start an AE project which will then be imported into FCP to do some audio and (standard) video editing…final output will be to DVC PRO 50. I just want to make sure that I get started correctly from the get go. Could somebody please help me with the project settings. I’m still confused about 720×480 or 720×486 or NTSC DV square pix 720×540 or 648×486….Thanks a lot!

Treat it like you would a regular old dv project (use the dv preset) and then output dv50 at the end.

The only gotcha is what frame rate was the video shot (if there is any video) and was it shot anamorphic? These will change the above answer.

[Dave LaRonde] “Use it like you’d use a 720×540 square-pixel comp”

I disagree, wholeheartedly. If you were working in Photoshop, I’d agree, but this is after effects, there’s a reason why the give you the square pixels review button. Also, it is absolutely possible that the frame rate is 23.98, not 29.97. Check with the editor. Look before you leap.

Also, if they are planning to online uncompressed, you will want to create and render at D1 resolution (720×486), and if indeed they are finishing at dv50, then stick with 720×480. If it is 16:9 (anamorphic 4:3) i’d create at 853×480 (if finishing dv50) or 864×486 if finishing uncompressed. Then upon final render “squeeze” (even though the check box says stretch) down to your final raster size of 720×480 or 720×486 in the output module. This will now create a squished up image that will play perfectly in any NLE that supports anamorphic SD footage.

[Dave LaRonde] “First, you need to find out what the resolution of DVCPro 50: 720×486 or 720×480?”

Nope, DVCPRO50 NTSC is ALWAYS 720×480.
I understand the doubts, because DVCPRO50 is in terms of quality closer to the online SD formats (720×486), but it’s actually a high quality variant of DV, so frame size is 720×480. Even for 16:9, is still that size with 16:9 aspect ratiio.

After Effects accounts for this aspect ratio difference, photoshop does not. It is for this reason when you draw a perfect circle using the circle mask, it looks a little out of proportion on your computer monitor, but on an NTSC monitor it looks like a perfect circle. If you don’t have an ntsc monitor hooked up and you hit the toggle pixel aspect ratio button (which is just a preview) you will see your oblong circle is now perfectly round. Maybe we just agree to disagree.
