Project setting confusion: Progressive, Interlaced, and Twixtor too
I am brand new to editing HD footage. I recently shot a wedding with three borrowed cameras (panasonic, Sony, and cheap 1080p kodak for wide shot). Everything is ready to render out right now, but I noticed I was having all kinds of issues with stuttering with my slow motion…I have another thread here from yesterday where I was told to use Twixtor…which I have now and it looks good (at least on the one clip I tested).
After watching a tutorial on Twixtor, it says that my project settings should be set to where the Deinterlace method is NONE or Interlaced…not blend. Here is where I am totally confused…and the more I read and research, the more confused I get.
I originally had my project setup for HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970fps)…Upper field first…Blend for Deinterlace method. This was all pretty much default. After watching the Twixtor video and reading more, I did a right-click on one of my clips and looked at the “media” specs. It shows that all my clips from my cameras are progressive scan.
Should I be setting up my project as a progressive scan project? My output will be a Sony AVC/MVC Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i, 16Mbps Blu Ray Disc.
If Twixtor says that I must not use BLEND for my project settings, it seems I MUST go this route…but will the output make a difference? My first test with Twixtor seemed to go well and my project was set to BLEND.
I need some help here…seems like all the way around! I thought I knew what I was doing, now I have doubts.

I did confirm that the “nice” camera I used is a Panasonic AG-HMC150. I know it shoots in 1080P…so all my cameras were 1080P.
Another note…when I said earlier that I right-clicked on the “media tab” on my clip, I am referring to the clip while it is in Vegas on the timeline.
My gut says that my project should all be set to NONE (progressive) and the final output will be the 1080i (interlaced) since it will be for mostly televisions. If that is TRUE, how will that affect Twixtor, if any?

Twixtor uses algorithms to find edges and the movement direction of those edges to create a whole new frame where none existed before. They say not to use blend because that causes the “base” image that the algorithms work on to be a bit confusing because two different points in time are being fused. Since these points in time are only a fraction of a second apart, however, it is not a big deal when the in frame motion to begin with is not that complicated. This is why your first “blended” output did not seem to look that bad. Interlace blended fast motion or complex movement (for example hair flipping) will start to blur and twitch in Twixtor if blending is being used. It does not break Twixtor, though.
Project settings where interlacing is concerned are for how the editor handles things. The settings should be for what your media IS not what it will be. In your case deinterlacing should be off since your media is progressive. The rendering template options will take care of interlacing the output no matter what the project settings are.

I think my current project settings are set at 1080i and upper field, etc.
If I go and change my project settings now, will it affect all the items on my timeline? I have heard it both ways…that everything changes with the new settings, and have heard that you must remove the video and bring it back in for the new settings to take hold (that would stink big time).
Also…will changing to progressive affect any of my ProDad menus and pictures on the timeline?
