I got a new project from a client on a hard drive. The project opens in FCP but as soon as I click anywhere in FCP, or do any keystrokes, the beach ball of death appears and hangs up FCP forever and I force quit. The same results happen if I open the project from the hard drive or one of my other internal drives on the MacPro that I transfered the project to.

I’m using FCP 6.06 & all my other projects open and work fine. There is obviously something in this particular project that FCP does not like. My client said it works fine on his machine. I’m pretty stumped. Any suggestions what I should be looking for? Thanks.

Was the project created in a different version of FCP? I’ve experienced something similar when importing EDLs or XMLs which were missing some vital piece of info. Or, in the case of an EDL, there was extraneous text in the text file.

Could be a corrupted file. If the project is opening up with a timeline and the playhead parked on a clip, make a note of the clip name. Quit FCP, then go to the media drive and and move that clip somewhere else so it’s offline when FCP launches.

Now see if FCP will run ok. If so, that particular clip is corrupted.

I was told it was created on 6.04 and my FCP is 6.06

Thank you both for your suggestions. I’ll test it out on Monday when I return to work and let you know what the results were. Thanks again.

Unfortunately none of your suggestions worked.

I found that the project timeline is made up of smaller timelines. The smaller timelines open and work okay. I’m trying to get from the client the order of the smaller timelines to reconstruct the larger timeline. Is that a good plan at this point?

I’ve reconstructed the project from smaller timelines and things are working normal now. Thanks again for your suggestions.
