  • Project Manager not working

Project manager is a great tool and thus far has worked flawlessly to consolidate projects, clearing up valuable disk space.

On the project I am currently trying, hitting Calculate comes up with Unknown for Original and Resulting Project sizes.

If you hit OK, the process starts but then gives an unknown error.
The unknown error seems to be synchronous with the Unknown project size result.

So I thought maybe there is a limit to Original size, as this was a huge project, so I started deleting sequences from a saved-as copy of the project.

    Same Unknown result.

Maybe there is a corrupt sequence.

Delete some more sequences, same thing.

Delete sequences one by one and keep trying, eventually I get a proper result of Project size, going from 79 to 16 gigs.

That is good, now let me delete the offending sequence from the original project and see what happens…

Nope – must not have been those particular sequences after all, which makes me think it was the total original file size.

Let me do some more selective deleting until I get a positive result…

OK – I got a project version with 3 sequences to work. Save that, go back to original.

Save 2nd, 3rd and 4th new versions of project without sequences in previous saved copies of original project until all original sequences are project managed.

So although I now have multiple projects, I have managed my original project.

Moral of story – weirdness prevails!

I suppose I could then create a new project and import the separate projects into it.

I have found on 2 different computers and both 1.5 and 2.0 that the Project manager seems to lay an egg with that unknown error garbage. Most times I wait until I ditch the media and then consolidate for back up. I played around in the beginning with it and the results I got are about like you. Fun Fun Fun!

glad I am not the only one.
Oddly, once I got a positive response on the Project size calculation, I would save and close the project, and move to the next set of sequences.

However upon opening the seemingly good project, it went back to unknown error again.
So far I have 6 project versions, but I need to check each new project to make sure things are ok.

With the low cost of SATA drives, I may just leave the larger projects alone!

I think you are onto something there. With Hard Drive space becoming so reasonable these days on larger and longer running projects it makes sense of just rolling it into the cost of the bid. Do you know where the best deals are these days?

    Thank You for your input!

we get our drives off newegg.com
actually for SD DV we found these cheap USB / SATA portable hard drive enclosures which cost about $60, and for each new drive you buy you buy a little doo-hickie which locks it into the enclosure. The throughput is fine for laying off to tape.

this is the SATA enclosure we use. Everyone has one so we can swap drives if needed.

Hey thanks for the info, It seems like I have been living in the bay a little much lately so my mind has been on other things besides research and procurement. I value the first hand info, makes it a no brainer!
