hi guys, just wondering if anyone has any tips for working with large file sizes etc.

ive been working in after effects for 14 years now but i think ive gotten stuck into some routines from years ago that may be slowing me down.

basically i just worked on a huge projection mapping job, around 6k resolution. my ae project contained multiple layered sequences from c4d (png sequences) plus some pre-rendered comps from after effects which i susally render prores.if i need alpha i render prores 4444 which still tend to be quite big files even if theres a lot of black in the frame. i did a test and rendered prores of this sequence but it still came out at about half the size, which is obviously way better, but is there a better way?

sometimes i have to pass over the project files or the client will ask to upload them but i do not have a good upload connection so file size has to be as low as possible.

i have never really used proxies but im guessing this might be a really good idea.

i work with trapcode particular a lot, recently i had a scene that had a crazy amount of partcles precomped into a scene which slowed me down big time, if people recommend proxies, what codec and format do people recommend? image sequences vs qt.

when it comes to workflow, i tend to do a lot of precomping, vs comps with50 layers+ would love to hear people thoughts on this. i know its a difficulat one to answer as these things are always project dependant. but general tips would be much appreciated.

    thanks guys.

This will sound like a flippant answer, but I do mean it seriously: large, fast disks. A big, fast spinning-disk RAID or a few SSDs.

I do a lot of large-format work, and I use proxies all the time — but not really as intended. I use full-quality proxies instead of pre-renders. If I need to ship off the project, I can just clear the proxies and send it, with the caveat of lengthy render times.

Sometimes shipping a drive is more efficient than uploading assets.
