  • Project files with multiple editors and systems

There are two assistant editors on my project. We each have an external drive with exact copies of our media. We operate on different Macs, same version of FCP – 6.02. Of late we’re having issues where FCP is not retaining edits we make to our sequences.

Normally we trade a single project file back and forth, importing new clips and edits from a “working” project into the “turnover” project. Considering the issues we’re having might our workflow be an issue?

We’ve attempted to keep everything identical: disk volume names, folders, filenames. We wonder if this might be a problem in the event some files aren’t truly identical (but should be). Or, perhaps the way in which FCP tracks clips/files doesn’t translate well between different systems.

I could go on but just wondering if swapping project files and copying/pasting clips is generally OK. Thoughts and suggestions on “multiple editors and different workplaces” are welcomed.

    TIA.
    Eric

    “Not retaining edits”?

If you have identical media drives that were cloned, and you DON’T use those drives to store renders, etc… it should be fairly clean.

Opening two projects and dragging the “new” edits into the “master” project should work great. Or you can possibly export and XML of an updated edit and import it into the “master” project. Do the working projects have unique names – so that they don’t get confused when you’re updating the “master”?

Regarding “not retaining edits” I mean FCP seems to have “undone” recent edits. We save the project and opening it next day – edits gone. Happened in a few cases on separate machines and separate project files.

The media files are cloned between both external drives. However, the drive name is the same. The project file name is different for the “working” and “master” projects and we take care to ensure we’re accessing the proper sequence name in each open project.

We’re having enough strange things happen (most recently, filters that suddenly don’t work) that our project needs a fresh start. XML import seems a good way, assuming there aren’t any bugs like discarding Speed Changes in clips (I read this is a FAQ).

Does anyone have a Standard Operating Procedure for naming drives, files, and projects for decentralized editing like this?
