  • Progressive scan versus upper field/ lower field

    When I render to AVI or MPG or other codes, I am given an option of Prog.. scan, or upper or lower field first… what is the meaning of all this.. would I be right in saying that Prog scan gives best quality, as each frame is retained in full…, & that I should just choose this….???

    Isnt Upper fileld/ lower field referring to interlacing, which is just a mechanism for displaying half ot the frame at any one time??

    thanks

    starting with the camera = progressive scan IMO has better quality then interlace … however if you shoot with a interlace camera then render using progressive settings IMO the rendered clip will have less resolution/quality then the original interlace .. but/and you might prefer that progressive “look” better then interlace ( original clip) ????

    i don’t believe Vegas displays fields (1/2 frames)

    What is IMO ?

    I try to set the cameras to prog scan before I film any thing, this was easy on my JVc, but on my other cameras, it involves a complex menu

    How can I know after capturing, whether those clips are PS? or interlaced?

    also what is the significance of the upper / lower field first?
    thanks

    IMO = in my opinion

    using Vegas explorer . left click on a captured clip (highlight it) below it will tell info about it IE: 720x480x24, 29.97 ,interlace ( or progressive) etc..

    If you shoot with a progressive scan camera then you will need to tell Vegas that the clip is progressive scan by going into the clip properties box.

    When you render out, especially if you are rendering for a DVD, it is best if you render it as progressive scan.

    On normal TV’s there might not be a difference in quality. However as soon as you play that DVD on a progressive scan DVD player through a high quality component etc connection you will notice a difference in quality. Progressive scan has 30 percent more apparent resolution than interlaced.

    If your original footage is interlaced then Vegas should automatically detect which field order to use.
