I have just gotten my new PD170 and decided to try and shoot some progressive footage. I set it up and noticed that when progressive mode was engaged the image on the viewfinder got darker (inside my home at nite). I turned on more light and ran about 3 minutes of tape. Is this normal? Why would shooting progressive need more light? I captured this with V5 and the properties show progressive. I then did a print to tape of the raw footage (no editing at all) and noticed a few things. Although I did a very smooth pan the image seems somewhat jerky. Is this to be expected? I focused on some 1/2″ blinds and when I zoomed in I saw a definite moire pattern. I thought that progressive was supposed to get rid of this sort of thing? Is this a result of viewing on an interlaced monitor? The project properties are set to progressive. I must admit that I am somewhat puzzled by all this.

I am looking for a tripod. I have seen the Bogen 501 and 503 heads and they look pretty nice. But I have read that the 501 is not a true fluid head. Is this true? Is it important?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jerry

The PD170 does not shoot in progressive mode. It just combines the interlaced frames in the camera…. so in my opinion it really isn’t of any significant use over recording in regular interlaced mode and then converting to progressive post-capture.

Further investigation shows that the PD170 gets a full frame every 1/15 second. This explains the jerky motion. Apparently progressive mode on this camera is only good if one wants to capture stills from video footage.

I have had three 501 heads and they are fine unless you want do do a really smooth tilt..then they suck.

yes progressive mode on the pd150 or pd170 is only good for capturing clear stills from video, for it records at only 15fps and doesnt make for pretty video. if you want progressive mode or the “look,” then use a camera with progressive ccds or do the effect in post. and i have the 501 head and its a decent match for the pd170 camera. there are better heads of course, but the 501 is good for the money.
