Progressive footage in a dv timeline
Hello. I am working in a sd dv 30 fps (720 480) timeline in fcp 7 and I shot some video on my t3i in sd at 30fps (640 480) intending to mix the footage. I know the dslr clips are progressive and h264 files. I am wondering what the best possible action to take would be. I have tried a few conversions in mpeg streamclip but I’d really like to know a definitive answer because I will be burning the project to DVD in DVD Studio Pro.

Use Compressor to convert them to ProRes 422…keep them HD. Then drop them into the DV timeline. You will have to adjust the scale on them, as they will show up letterboxed.

I converted them to prores 422 in mpeg streamclip and they look fine although they require a render I’m just hoping these clips look alright in tandem with the dv clips when burned to dvd. I was concerned with field order/interlace ect

Fast motion might look different since 29.97 interlaced ‘updates’ every 1/60th of a second while 29.97 progressive only ‘updates’ every 1/30th of a second but you should have any field order problems since progressive footage has no fields to mix up.

And rendering is normal. Any footage that doesn’t match the settings of the sequence requires a render
