  • Progressive and interlaced in the same sequence?

Posted by Solfrid Nikita tveit on November 11, 2008 at 2:30 pm

    Hi!
Has anyone experience with mixing both progressive and interlaced video in one sequence, and exporting it into QT?
I have a project containing footage from RED (progressive – 4k and 2k, down- converted to SD) and Sony HVR-Z1E (interlaced – DV PAL).

My question is: Is there any way of keeping the quality that I see in my Canvas, into the exported file?
Any codecs that works better than others for this?
How should I treat my footage from RED, considering it is not interlaced and I choose de-interlacing during the final export?

    Powermac G4
    10.4.11
    FCP 5.1.4.

    Thanks in advance,
    Solfrid

We mix the two together all the time, but we actually use the Kona 3 to convert all our footage so it matches before we start the edit. The Kona 3 does a pristine job making the conversion.

Okay, I’ve heard some great stuff about that capture card and I am looking forward to the day when I can test it out!
But I am a student still, so investing is not my strongest side right now 😀

Is there any other way to export both progressive and interlaced video, but still keep the quality?

    Thanks in advance,
    Solfrid

    Probably using some plug-ins, but there again you’ll be spending $500 – $1,000 for a good plug-in.

If you’re just a student, put the footage into the same timeline and render. Content should matter over the final quality for what you’re doing.

    JES Deinterlace is excellent:

Good price for students. It’s free.

You still need to know how to use it. What frame rate is the RED footage?

    Hi and thanks 😀

I’ll check out the JES Deinterlacer!

RED footage is shot at 25 fps. Originally two of the scenes was shot in 50 fps, but we imported it into Shake for some graphic background etc, and then exported it as SD at 25 fps 😀

    Thanks in advance,

Just read the help document, it’s pretty easy to learn. So students are shooting on RED now? That’s pretty amazing.
