  • Program Monitor???

Posted by Dave Hirschberg on October 15, 2007 at 5:03 pm

I am trying to find a good HD program monitor for our FCP suites. We will have 4 suites but right now we are building the 1st. The others will model this one. We have everything but the program monitor and I am not sure where to go. I am using a Kona 3 for now. It will be switched out for the HD version soon, but for now we just have the standard def version. I just tested out a 26″ Vizio and was not impressed at all. I have read a bit about the Dell 2407, but there are so many monitors I have no idea where to even begin. Can I get some suggestions or tell me what you are using? My budget is around $1000 give or take a few bucks.

    Thanks,

Just for REFERENCE, right? Not for actual judging of quality?

I use one of my Dells for that…2405. But I know that the Panasonic Plasma TH42PH9UK is what Walter uses. I have one as my home TV, and I would LOVE to use it as my client monitor…

Reference yes, but it will be my only source monitor so I might have to do some correction work on it. I know black levels are not true on the LCD’s but can’t I use the scope for that?

Scopes will let you know if you are within legal limits. But you need a monitor that will show you a true representation of color for you to know what you are really getting when you adjust the color. What might look RED on this monitor, might actually be SALMON on another.

I hear the Panasonic can be darn close to the PVM-14L5…so if it isn’t broadcast critical I can see it as a possibility.

Our stuff is for broadcast so I want to represent color as best as I can, but my problem is I am running into the cheapness of corporate bean counters. The money is a BIG factor. No way they are dropping 5 or 6k for a monitor. I need to get a real good monitor that stays in the budget. They will pay millions for crappy talent, but nothing for good equipment! do you think the Dell is a good enough solution? What about an Apple display throut the AJA breakout box?

Dell for color correction? No way. Apple thru an AJA box? Hmm…no.

The best I can offer is the Matrox MXO and Apple Cinema Display. What makes the Matrox so powerful is that it converts the DVI signal coming out of the graphics card to a proper HD monitor signal thus converting the Apple display into a color correctable monitor. PLUS…and this is the BIG part…it has control for ADJUSTING the Hue, Saturation, Brightness and Contrast on that monitor, AND a BLUE ONLY option so that you can set the monitor to bars. The AJA SDI>DVI converter doesn’t offer that. I think the Decklink HD Link might (I heard it did), but I haven’t tested it.

I have tested the MXO and compared it to my HD CRT and I can say that I got them VERY close. Close enough that I’d be comfortable using the MXO and Apple 23″ to color correct a show.

Now…those “bean counters” have to get it into their skull that in order to do things properly, you need the proper equipment. Sure, they save $5000 now, but what happens when the show that you spent a lot of money onlining and color correcting gets rejected by QC? And you have to spend more money fixing it and doing it right? More money will be expended fixing the issue instead of getting the proper equipment in the first place. THAT is something you have to tell them. To save money, you can get ONE proper HD monitor and either share it, or have one station that does all the color correction.

Still, I’ll stand by my MXO recommendation if they are wanting to be sticklers and save money. Otherwise, I HIGHLY recommend the JVC DT-V24L1DU. $4800.

If I use the Matrox MXO I am down to a single edit montitor, right? Is there a way to split one of the DVI outs so I can still have 2 edit monitors?

Correct…down to one monitor while using this. I have been trying to get the matrox DualHead2go, the DVI splitter, to work but haven’t had the best of luck…just can’t get it to work right.

So what you can do is use the MXO when you are in the CC phase and really only need one monitor to look at your timeline and canvas/viewer/waveforms. Or seriously, push for a proper monitor that works with your existing AJA card. Again, the argument is that if you get the proper equipment to do things, you save money in the long run…

I guess it might take a mistake actually happening for them to see the light on this….it usually does.

Or look for a PVM-14L5 HD CRT on eBay…that is what I use. $1500 when I bought it.
