Activity Forums Adobe After Effects Professional Looking Photo Montage

Hello, I’m new to the forums and After Effects in general. I was thinking about creating a photo montage for my girlfriend and wasn’t sure of how to do basic things in After Effects as in Adobe Premier. I have all of the pictures I’d like to use and the music to go along with it.

I tried my first effect: Shatter. What I wanted is for the picture to shatter and for a background text layer to appear underneath the shattered photo. All I got was a map of what looked like bricks. I figured a few things out from there though, however, not enough to get me going at a pace that would allow me to finish within the year. Also, I tried to make the text glow and make a change to the glow effects, but the glow in After Effects is a totally different animal than the one in Photoshop.

As a side note, I’m using Windows Vista 32-bit, and all programs mentioned are CS3.

I want this film/montage to be as professional looking as possible, however keyframes seem to be the downfall of smooth effects and 3D camera movement. Is this where the “expressions” component comes in? If so, can someone point me in the right direction for a beginner’s tutorial on those?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

AE is a moderately complex and very powerful application so expect a steep learning curve. Your familiarity with Photoshop will help and you will find many things similar and many things to be completely different.

Understanding the basics will make figuring out things on your own much easier. I recommend starting with these tutorials that will introduce you to a lot of the features of AE and its overall infrastructure:

After that, you may find this tutorial will help get you started in the right direction for the type of project you are planning:
