Professional Cleaning of Camera Heads
Okay guys, this may seem like an utterly retarded question, but I need to ask.
I’ve read over posts regarding my problem (I’m getting multiple glitches in audio and video) VERY frequently. Occasionally, a head cleaning tape will help, but not always. This is becoming increasingly frustrating.
I bought my two cameras used (ebay), and never knew til recently I needed to have heads professionally cleaned. Call me a videographer flying by the seat of my pants.. Ha, Ha!
Anyway, I want to send both cameras to the same place (one is a Canon XLs1, and the other is a Sony DVR900.
I would like to avoid having to send them to different places.So this is just a question regarding a reliable place to send my cameras off to for cleaning. How long does this usually take?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated on this. I really DREAD sending these cameras off anywhere.. and I’m hoping that there is a local place that can do it.

OH! one more thing. What happens when the heads wear out? Is this fixable?

As for your question about sending in both cameras to the same place: find a reputable broadcast supply house in your area and get the tape transport and heads cleaned and adjusted on both cameras.
Your cameras are pretty old, especially the XL1s so I don’t know if there are still parts available. There are a ton of GL2 and XL1s cameras (both use the same tape mechanisms) still in use so perhaps you’ll get lucky when you talk to Canon about replacing heads when it’s needed. Another reason to pay a visit to your local broadcast supply house.

Thank you very much for this information. It does tell me exactly what I need to know. I don’t have much of a budget for any of this stuff, and I’ve been putting it off forever. I’ve been getting that message “eject tape” for a long time now… but somehow I always get it to work.
I have also been WAY over using the tape cleaner 🙁
Just didn’t know any better.
