  • Production Suggestions – Pasting Logo on Coffee cup sleeve

Posted by Brian Tetamore on March 20, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Thought I’d ask for suggestions on pasting a client logo on a coffee cup sleeve – think Starbucks. This will be a spec production spot that will involve two ladies drinking coffee at a coffee bar. The storyboard highlights the client logo on the sleeve, but since it’s designed to be brandable we’d like to have the option to “add” the logo in post.

Any ideas? I was thinking of using a blank coffee cup sleeve and painting a red or green dot where the logo would go. Then use motion tracking to place the logo.

    Thanks in advance.

That’s not bad, as long as the dot is very bright and contrasts with the sleeve. However, if the cup *turns* you have to wrap the CG logo around a CG cylinder. And the CC cylinder effect in AE is very hard to move around, certainly by tracking. It’s an old effect that doesn’t play well with 3D cameras, in my opinion.

Also in my opinion, if the sleeve moves toward or away from camera (in z-space), this is a job for a matchmoving app such as Syntheyes, and a real 3D app that can work with it.

Now if the logo doesn’t turn, but stays flat to camera and moves in the XY plane only, you might be able to do it with AE only.

Do a test before you shoot, just so you know what’s involved.

It’s maybe more easy to do the contrary : shoot a cup WITH the logo and then mask it in post-prod if needed.

Instead of using a dot on the cup while shooting, you may want to consider a solid square or rectangular patch that can be keyed out if required. The logic behind this being that when you place your logo against the cup you get the spatial bounds of your logo area no matter which way the cup moves (XYZ). You also get a more accurate idea of the 3D curve. The only restriction is that your logo will have to be scaled to the patch size so you have an accurate guide while mapping the logo against it.

I concur. And the corners of the square should be easier to track.

Or maybe use four dots at the corners of an imaginary square. Less to remove.
